6-month-old boy dies from injuries allegedly inflicted by father

A 6-month-old boy is dead after his father allegedly bent him in half out of frustration, according to officials.

The Arizona Department of Child Safety reported that the baby died Dec. 21 from injuries sustained two days earlier.

According to the DCS, Robert Resendiz called police to report his child was unresponsive on a couch at their residence near 12th Street and Camelback Road.

Robert Resendiz (MCSO)

Mr. Resendiz told police he discovered his son with a blanket over his face and that the baby had a previous history of either choking or having a seizure.

Medical personnel transported the boy to the hospital, with staff revealing the baby had multiple, significant injuries inconsistent with Mr. Resendiz’s story.

According to a police report, upon the boy arriving at Phoenix Children's Hospital, doctors observed the boy had a liver laceration, wrist fracture, laceration of the pancreas and pattern bruising to his thigh.

However, Mr. Resendiz eventually admitted to causing the injuries. The Phoenix Police Department arrested him on child abuse charges.

The DCS has never received any reports involving Mr. Resendiz for child abuse. However, the department has received one prior report involving the baby.

On Oct. 13, the DCS received a report regarding the neglect of the baby by his mother.

The DCS reports the boy had a major surgery during the first week of his life. However, his mother is alleged to have neglected to take him to follow-up care after the surgery.

A following DCS investigation revealed the mother had recently switched insurance plans and had been taking the baby to a doctor.

However, the allegations were unsubstantiated.

The DCS said there were no other children residing in the home at the time of the baby’s death.

Mr. Resendiz is in jail on three counts of child abuse, with a bond set at $250,000, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

His next court appearance is Dec. 27.
