At this point the first Liberty football game without Jax Stam will be, well, weird.
Stam started at safety in the first varsity game of his freshman year and has not left the lineup since — a stretch of 46 games through the end of the regular season. As his career wraps up some time in the next month, Stam is more like another defensive coach than an ordinary starter.
He was listed at 5-10, 180 pounds as a freshman and 5-11, 200 pounds as a senior. Never an owerwhelming physical specimen, Stam has nonetheless become one of the more respected players in the state thanks to his hard-hitting approach and his ability to diagnose opposing offenses and set up the defense for success.
