Police say students devised violent plan against classmate

Surprise Police arrested four students at Legacy Traditional School in connection with a plan to carry out an act of violence towards a fellow fifth-grade student.

Police were able to detain the students without incident after working in partnership with school staff and the school resource officer assigned to Legacy Traditional School.

The students were not armed, and there was no threat to the school or the surrounding community.

The students admitted to making the threats of violence towards another student and were released to their parents.

Criminal charges will be filed with the Maricopa County Juvenile Court for each of the juveniles for threatening and disorderly conduct, both Class 1 misdemeanors.

“This investigation is the result of brave students reporting dangerous activity to their school staff, who quickly involved their assigned school resource officer to ensure the safety of the student and school,” said Surprise Police Chief Benny Piña.

Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Surprise Police Department at 623-222-4000 or 623-222-TIPS (8477), or email crimetips@surpriseaz.gov.
