Three men were arrested in connection with a deadly shooting at an apartment complex in southeast Phoenix.

Phoenix police announced Ahmed and Obed Gutierrez, both 18, and Jonah A. Cleaver- Bascombe, 20, were arrested Monday on charges of homicide and robbery.

Around 7 p.m. Sunday officers responded to an apartment complex near 40th Street and Baseline Road for a shooting call.

Officers found 19-year-old Alonzo Gabriel Morales with a gunshot injury. He was taken to the hospital with extremely critical injuries. However, on Monday police announced he died from his injuries.

In arrest records for the three suspects, police learned Mr. Morales and his girlfriend were attempting to sell drugs while inside their vehicle to the Gutierrezes and Mr. Cleaver-Bascombe. However, Mr. Cleaver-Bascombe allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Mr. Morales in the head while Ahmed assaulted and restrained the female victim.

The suspects exited and fled after the shooting. Mr. Morales’ girlfriend told police she knew two of the suspects, whom she identified as Ahmed and Obed, who are twins.

Police learned the Gutierrezes lived at another apartment complex in the area. Officers found and arrested them there along with Mr. Cleaver-Bascombe around 4:20 a.m. Monday. Obed’s girlfriend was also inside the unit.

Obed’s girlfriend told police she saw the three return to the apartment out of breath. She believed and later learned a robbery had occurred.

Obed told police he had pulled out his own money to make the victims think the suspects were going to buy drugs. However, he then punched Mr. Morales several times and elbowed the female passenger. He reportedly fled with the female’s backpack and later tossed it.

Ahmed told police he was in the vehicle to protect his brother. Mr. Cleaver-Bascombe refused to talk with police.

Police found the female victim’s wallet and ID inside a trash can at the twins’ apartment.

All three suspects are in jail in lieu of $750,000 bonds. They are due in court Nov. 27 and 29.

Twins ran away from home

This incident was not the first time the twin suspects have been mentioned by a police agency.

The Gutierrezes were reported as runaway teenagers out of Surprise in October 2017.

However, Surprise police said that case was closed in January after they returned home.
