Phoenix police said two people have died after a collision in west Phoenix Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred before 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 67th Avenue and Thomas Road, involving three vehicles.

Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Jake Van Hook said five people were treated and transported, including three people from different vehicles. Mr. Van Hook said they were in extremely critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Officers determined that two vehicles traveling in opposite directions on Thomas Road collided head-on.

The adult female driver of one vehicle and the adult male passenger of another were taken to local hospitals where they died of their injuries. The driver of the second vehicle remains in critical condition at a local hospital.

Police said a third vehicle was struck in the collision. The 37-year-old female driver and 22-year-old female  passenger were transported to local hospitals with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, according to Phoenix Fire.

Mr. Van Hook said crews had to technically extricate two of the patients.

The area was restricted while officials cleared the scene and investigated.
