Eric J. Wittenberg will speak on “Holding the Line On the River of Death: Union Cavalry at Chickamauga” March 17 as part of the Scottsdale Civil War Roundtable.

While John Buford’s cavalry action on the first day of Gettysburg is well known, a little recognized Union cavalry stand on the first day of the Battle of Chickamauga will be Mr. Wittenberg’s topic, according to a press release.

Mr. Wittenberg is an award-winning Civil War historian and a recognized expert on cavalry operations. He is the author of 22 critically-acclaimed books on the American Civil War.

He also serves on the boards of trustees of the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust and the Little Big Horn Associates, and often works with the American Battlefields Trust on battlefield preservation initiatives. He recently became program coordinator for the Chambersburg Civil War Seminars.

Mr. Wittenberg is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and partner and litigation practice manager for Cook, Sladoje & Wittenberg in Columbus, Ohio where he resides.
The Scottsdale Civil War Roundtable meets at 5:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month (except July, July and August) at the Scottsdale Civil Center Library Auditorium, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd.

Speakers are comprised of Civil War experts from around the country. The group supports battlefield preservation. All are welcome to attend.
