SUSD shifts to weekly meal distribution from six locations

The Scottsdale Unified School District Nutrition Services department is changing its free meal program for children in an effort to further protect families and staff members from potential exposure to the novel coronavirus.
Beginning April 15, meals will be distributed weekly --- on Wednesdays --- rather than each weekday. Adults can pick up five breakfasts and five lunches for every child ages 1 – 18 in the household, according to a press release.
Meals will be distributed from 9–11 a.m. every Wednesday at these SUSD school parking lots:
Mohave Middle School, 8490 E. Jackrabbit Road;
Navajo Elementary Oak Campus, 7501 E. Oak St.;
Redfield Elementary School, 9181 E. Redfield Road;
Tavan Elementary, 4610 E. Osborn Road in Phoenix;
Tonalea K-8, 6720 E. Continental Drive; and
Yavapai Elementary, 701 N. Miller Road.
Thursday, April 9, will be the last day for bus stop-style distributions and there will be no meal distribution Friday, April 10 due to a district recess.
“We want to make sure we are doing our best to help ‘flatten’ the coronavirus curve in our community, and see these changes as finding a balance between contributing to that overall effort and serving those in need,” Nutrition Services Director Patti Bilbrey said in a prepared statement.
From March 16, the first week SUSD schools were closed as a result of the state and national COVID-19 pandemic, through April 8, Ms. Bilbrey’s department has provided more than 33,000 free meals to children in the community.
