Former Scottsdale resident discusses recent collaboration

Posted

The lifestyle apparel brand Stevenson Ranch has a track record of collaborating with major brands and artists like JBL, Bailey Zimmerman, Snoop Dogg and Death Row Records.

Making waves in casual western wear, the streetwear-meets-Wild West brand recently made its debut collaboration with an official sports team, partnering with the Arizona Coyotes.

Stevenson Ranch is co-founded by the American hip-hop recording artist known professionally as mike. (formerly Mike Stud), who says this partnership with the Coyotes embraces the “rugged beauty of the desert” and the vibrant communities in the Valley.

The collaboration features a selection of mesh shorts, tops and an assortment of canvas snapback hats with the Coyotes’ newly branded sun applique that combines desert landscapes with Coyotes cactus print and the Stevenson Ranch tagline, “Not My First Rodeo.”

A former Scottsdale resident and athlete turned musician, mike. says the collaboration is about “pushing the envelope in sports fashion.”

“Teaming up with the Coyotes Collection is a huge step forward for Stevenson Ranch,” mike. said. “It was a no-brainer and perfect fit for our first professional sports team collab.”

Coyotes Collaborations

Over the last few years, the Arizona Coyotes has stepped up its fashion game with the help of the organization’s former Creative Strategist Rhugi Villasenor, a Filipino-American fashion designer who designed the team’s Desert Collection through the Coyotes’ transition from Glendale to the ASU Mullett Arena in Tempe.

In November 2023, the Coyotes tapped LA Designer Doni Nahmias as the organization’s newest creative strategist, introducing the NAHMIAS x Arizona Coyotes collection and most recently, a collaborative capsule partnership with Bauer, the leading hockey outfitter and equipment manufacturer.

Valley forever

From making melodies in his college dorm room to touring the world, promoting his music and lifestyle brand, mike. lived in Scottsdale during a tumultuous time in his life.

Previously an LA resident, mike. had an open-door policy at his California home, welcoming friends to stop by and kick back whenever they wished, “kind of like a saloon,” he said.

When the hangouts ended in the throes of COVID-19, mike. packed up with his friends and hit the road. He found Scottsdale and immediately connected with the landscapes and scenery.

“I love the desert, I love the mountains. I love this whole area,” he said, adding that his collaboration with the Arizona Coyotes encapsulates the essence of the Valley and the Southwest U.S.

From the diamond to the rink

Lettering in both baseball and basketball in high school and earning Rhode Island’s 2006 Gatorade Player of the Year, mike. (born Michael Francis Seander) earned an athletic scholarship to Duke University as an All-American Blue Devils pitcher.

Despite an impressive collegiate baseball career (1.61 ERA with second-most saves in Duke history according to Duke Athletics), mike. suffered an arm injury that required Tommy John surgery. He transferred to Georgetown University where he was on the mound for nine games his senior year, putting a cap on his baseball career.

While in recovery, mike. turned to music and fashion design, eventually co-founding Stevenson Ranch and producing notable musical releases including his 2013 debut studio album, “Relief,” his 2022 album “why not us?” His newest album “the lows” is expected to drop in April 2024.

Through his time in sports and on stage, mike. made connections on the rink, including his close friend and favorite hockey player, Dallas Stars Center Tyler Seguin.

“The hockey guys have a great culture and the (comradery) is evident,” he said, adding that many hockey players have become dedicated supporters of his music and endeavors over the years.

mike. says teaming up with the Coyotes Collection is a huge step forward for Stevenson Ranch, blending the brand’s distinct style with the hockey team’s devoted fanbase and the lively Arizona scene.

“The Coyotes grasp the significance of merging sports and fashion to enhance community value, and I’m happy to be a part of it,” he said.
