Phoenix police identify officers shot, 1 remains in critical condition

The two Phoenix police officers who were shot in the line of duty Tuesday night have been identified as Zane Coolidge and Matthew Haney.

Coolidge, who remains in critical condition, is a five-year veteran of the department and is assigned to the field training squad in the Mountain View Precinct, according to a release.

Haney, who has been recovering at home, has been with the department for two years, joining after seven years of serving as an officer in a municipality in northern California.

The suspect, 41-year-old Saul Bal, remains in custody and is being held on a $2 million bond. He faces charges including attempted homicide, weapons violations and burglary from vehicle.

“Bal has a violent criminal history and is a prohibited possessor,” police stated in an earlier release.

At about 6:30 p.m. Sept. 3, a two-person patrol unit was dispatched on a call of a man trying to break into a vehicle by a home near 16th and Brill streets, police said.

Officers approached the suspect who fled on foot and, after a short pursuit, he started shooting at them, an earlier release stated. Both officers were hit. One officer returned fire, but Bal was not struck.

Bal took off again, police said, but was arrested nearby by other officers.
