Head-on collision kills driver during Phoenix rush hour, impairment suspected

Posted

Two vehicles collided late Wednesday afternoon in the 2900 block of East Southern Avenue, killing a 46-year-old man, Phoenix police said.

The crash occurred about 5 p.m. March 13 during rush-hour traffic near 29th Street and Southern Avenue, police said.

Jimmy Anthony Aviles was taken to a hospital where he died. The man driving the other car was taken for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to a release.

Authorities are continuing to investigate, but preliminary information suggests Aviles was traveling west on Southern Avenue when he failed to control his speed and crossed over into oncoming traffic, striking the other vehicle.

Police said investigators suspect impairment was a factor.
