Peoria Unified student wins regional spelling bee

The Maricopa County Region IV Spelling Bee took place on Friday, Feb. 19 and there were two Peoria Unified winners.

Braedyn Matthews, an eighth-grade student from Heritage Elementary School became the Region IV champion with the winning word, “extinguish.”

Christine Koenig, an eighth grade student from Foothills Elementary School secured third-place in the regional competition.

The spelling bee was streamed live and anyone unable to watch the event can view it on-demand on the district’s YouTube channel.

Matthews will advance to the state spelling bee in March. Finally, twenty-seven students from across the state will move on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. this summer.
