The Mesa Police Department is investigation a shooting Thursday afternoon when Tempe officers shot and killed a man who fired a gun at them, authorities said.

Mesa police received a call at about 2:25 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, from Tempe officers who asked for assistance from the department’s air unit. Tempe officers were trying to find a suspect who had left the scene of a domestic violence incident in Tempe.

The air unit found the gray Chevy Silverado truck in Tempe and relayed its location to officers who followed it into Mesa where it stopped in the 1400 block of West Vine. The suspect left the vehicle and began walking west. Tempe officers contacted him at Vine and Rogers, police said.

“When officers attempted to take the man into custody, the man fired a handgun at officers. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect,” a Mesa Police Department release stated.

Officers attempted lifesaving measures until medical help arrived. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was found lying next to the 41-year-old suspect.

No officers suffered injuries.

Mesa police are leading an investigation.
