Limelight Performing Arts in Gilbert will bring middle school trials and triumphs to the stage with two musicals that get right to the heart of what it means to grow up.

The youth theater company is the first in Arizona to present “Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Musical,” on stage April 6-21. Opening the following weekend is “13: The Musical,” which runs April 12-21. Both productions, rich in humor and heart, take audiences through the growing pains of adolescence, the quest for identity and the social dynamics of school life.

“Wimpy Kid” brings Jeff Kinney’s beloved book series to the stage. It follows the story of Greg Heffley, an average middle schooler with big dreams and an even bigger imagination, as he navigates life’s ups and downs with his quirky family and friends by his side. From embarrassing moments to laugh-out-loud mishaps, Greg’s diary entries come to life through new and catchy songs like “The Cheese Touch” and “Zoo-Wee Mama,” leaving audiences smiling from ear to ear.

The 60-minute musical is performed by talented young actors from across the Valley – including 10-year-old Mesa performer Rosalind Quintana, who plays the role of Brandi Beardo. The story addresses the challenges of fitting in, the ever-present threat of bullies and the constant worry about being labeled a “nerd” or a “popular kid.” It will soon become a favorite of audiences of all ages – especially young readers and older teens who have grown up with the books.

“13” provides another glimpse of adolescent life through the story of Evan Goldman, a New York City transplant who’s thrust into small-town Indiana just as he’s about to turn 13. What sets this show apart is its authenticity. Delivered by a cast of gifted performers, “13” captures the essence of teenage angst and the all-consuming desire to fit in, from the awkwardness of first crushes to the heartbreak of social rejection.

But it’s not just the performers who shine in this production – the music itself is a star. Written by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, with a book by Dan Elish and Robert Horn, the score blends pop-rock sensibilities with Broadway flair. From the infectious opening number, “13/Becoming a Man,” to the deeply moving “What it Means to be a Friend,” each song carries the story forward and holds up a mirror to audiences who’ve experienced the highs and lows of growing up.

The cast of “13” includes seven performers from Mesa: Owen Aspinall, 16, as Archie; Sophie Aspinall, 13, as Sarah; Emma Coxon, 15, as Cassie; Abigail Drake, 13, as Cassie; Scarlette Nuno, 14, as Molly; Colin Quintana, 15, as Brett/Archie; and Savannah Springer, 14, as Patrice.

With relatable and hilarious music and dialogue, both “Wimpy Kid” and “13” deliver important messages about friendship, self-acceptance and the power of being true to oneself.
