Mesa educator chosen to lead Power Ranch Elementary in Gilbert

Higley Unified School District has hired a Mesa Public Schools assistant principal to lead Power Ranch Elementary School next school year.

Michelle Wheat McNabb  comes to HUSD from her role as an assistant principal at Porter Elementary School. She replaces interim principal Brian Griggs, who took over after Chris Reuter abruptly resigned in November.

Reuter's resignation, which the district said was done by mutual agreement, unleashed protests from Power Ranch parents defending Reuter and wanting to know the circumstances, which were never released.

Over McNabb's 20-year career, she has also served as a math teacher and Title I School Improvement Specialist.

She earned her master's in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University and has been recognized for her mentoring, co-teaching, and fostering collaborative environments.

Her selection, according to a district release, was the culmination of a rigorous process over the past several months Power Ranch Elementary families were surveyed to determine the leadership qualities that were prioritized in the application and selection process.

A selection committee including representatives from district and school staff narrowed the decision, and found McNabb’s combination of experience, expertise, and leadership approach to be a great fit for Power Ranch Elementary, according to the release.

“I’m committed to a culture of trust and respect, where collaboration thrives and every voice is valued,” McNabb said in the releasae. “We shape a school community where every member is empowered to reach their fullest potential and contribute meaningfully to our shared goals.

McNabb will start in July leading up to the next school year. She will focus on instruction, empowering educators, and enhancing student outcomes, according to the district.
