Mesa council approves 27-month contract to replace 911 system for Mesa police, fire

The Mesa police and fire departments will see their 911 systems replaced in the near future.

During an April 15 meeting, the Mesa City Council voted 6-0 (with councilmember Scott Somers absent) to approve a contract that would replace the current 911 systems based on the ones used by Phoenix with the ones used by the State of Arizona Department of Administration.

This transition began after a Jan. 4 vote resulted in the conclusion of the current contract Mesa had with the city of Phoenix to use its 911 technology. The system used by the state is provided by AT&T, which will be adopted by Mesa. The contract will last 27 months and will cost $1.7 million for the first year and $950,000 annually for subsequent years, with an annual increase allowance of up to 5% or the adjusted Consumer Price Index.

“With the emergence of virtualized call services, data centers and Next Generation 911 technology, the efficacy of the MR911 model has changed. Contracting with the state of Arizona Department of Administration’s contracted providers has emerged as the next preferred service model given new technologies and resource constraints,” a council report said.

Although the contract is active as of April 15, it is unclear as to when the 911 systems would actually be replaced.
