The city of Avondale broke ground on a new sand volleyball complex at The BLVD.
Avondale Parks and Recreation Department members and city officials took part in the project’s ceremonial groundbreaking.
The complex will be situated on a one-acre parcel at The BLVD, adjacent to the existing Randall McDaniel Sports Complex, at 765 N. 114th Ave. The former Avondale City Center in 2019 rebranded as The BLVD (The Boulevard), which will cover 356 acres comprising six district concepts for shopping, dining, entertainment and living, with pedestrian-friendly street and outdoor activities.
Facility amenities at the new complex will include up to five competition-grade sand volleyball courts; perimeter fencing for security and privacy; spectator seating for viewing; shade structures for comfort during matches; drinking fountains and an automatic water system for hydration; security cameras for enhanced safety and surveillance; landscape improvements to beautify the surroundings; and a restroom building for players and spectators.
The $2.9 million project is expected to be completed by June next year. A grant of $162,500 from the Arizona Sports Tourism Association helped fund this project.
“This groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of a transformative project that will enhance the recreational landscape of our city,” Avondale Parks and Recreation Director Bryan Hughes shared in a press release. “We look forward to the completion of the Sand Volleyball Complex, which will serve as a hub for additional athletic and community engagement.”
The project civil engineering and landscape architecture will be completed by Gavin & Barker Inc. and the facility construction contract was awarded to Chasse Building Team.
