Posted
Compiled by Richard Smith, Independent Newsmedia
Spring high school sports have started at Mountain Ridge High School.
Most of the school’s team sports remain in the 6A conference. Some sports, like tennis and track and field, retain the old division system and Mountain Ridge is in Division I for those sports.
West Valley Preps and the Glendale Independent asked the school’s coaches about their teams. Here are their responses.
Coach: Artie Cox (third year as Mountain Ridge coach)
2019 Record: 18-15 overall, 4-6 region (6A third place)
Region: 6A Desert Valley
Top returning players? Travis Warriner, Sr., SS (.347, 22 RBI); Brock Peery, Sr., RP/3B (2-0, 1.59 ERA, 7 saves, 30 K in 22 IP, 20 RBI)
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Pitching and defense. Eighteen returning players from last years team. We have our entire starting line up back except one position.
What will your team need to improve for the season to be a success? Offensive productivity and limiting walks.
Who are your team leaders? Zach Rogers, Brock Peery, Keegan Stancato and Travis Warinner.
Who are newcomers to the varsity squad who could make an impact? A.J. Singer.
What needs to happen for your squad to reach the state tournament, or achieve the goals you have set this season? Stay healthy, pitch and play defensive to a high level and increase our offensive output.
