Local voices: Fans react to Cards picking Murray with No. 1 pick

Posted

The Cardinals drafted the 2018 Heisman Trophy winner, Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft Thursday night.

In last year's draft, the Cardinals traded up to draft UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen 10th overall. Rosen threw 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions on his way to a 3-10 record as a starter in his rookie year last season. After drafting Murray, the Cardinals will likely look to trade Rosen.

Fire drunk Steve Keim. - CBENITEC11

Good pick. Lol just because we got Kyler Murray doesn't mean he's going to start.. he's got to have time to develop. - Andre Tillman Jr.

I hope I'm wrong, but we're picking top 5 next year. - Richard Pivonka

Fire Steve. Bidwill should sell the team. When @josh3rosen hoists the Lombardi, Kingsbury is back in college, and Murray is sitting on the couch I will laugh and laugh. - David Dunham

Kliff is setting up his team for many more early first round picks. Bad DL, bad OL, old RB and WR, good 2nd year QB...the same philosophy that created such success at Tech... - Mike Crouch

Lame pick, and here I thought kiem had his magic back with the signings this off-season. But this is classic bad. - Newell Godwin

I'll buy this jersey! - Sondra Murray

Is Rosen getting traded day 2? A 2nd rounder sounds good. - Richard Henckel

All the house is on fire fans, we want wins. When we get them, I'll see you back here with the #BeRedSeeRed back on the ends of your tweets. - Cardinals Talk

Let's GO!!! - ASU MOMS

I feel terrible for Josh Rosen. I’d be demanding Keim to trade me immediately if I was him. Flip him off out the door. - Zachariah

Great choice, Rosen was a horrible football player. - David Stanny

I am not happy. Rosen never got a real chance. If we don’t get an offensive line, Murray won’t last a season.

Learning from history

The only other times a team drafted a quarterback in the first round in back-to-back years was when the Baltimore Colts drafted Art Schlichter fourth overall in 1982 and John Elway first overall in 1983. The Colts traded Elway to the Broncos, wear he had a Hall of Fame career, shortly after drafting him. Schlichter started only six games in his three-year NFL career and was suspended for the 1983 season for gambling.

The Los Angeles Rams drafted a quarterback in the first seven picks three years in a row, taking Roman Gabriel second overall in 1962, Terry Baker first overall in 1963 and Bill Munson first overall in 1964. Gabriel, the first quarterback drafted, ended up winning the job long term, starting 119 games over 11 years. Baker started only five games in his three-year NFL career. Munson started 18 games with the Rams in his first two seasons before Gabriel won the job.
