Glendale proclaims Black History Month

Official celebration, events at GCC still to come

During the Feb. 13 Glendale City Council meeting, Mayor Jerry Weiers proclaimed February as Black History Month in the city.

Weiers presented Marcia Garland, founder of the Black Business Owners Coalition Of Glendale, with the proclamation.

Glendale Community College, 6000 W. Olive Ave., continues to celebrate Black History Month with several events, including:

  • Black Wall Street, presented by Rorvis Gilmore Jr.., is from Noon-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21 in SU 104 E. Gilmore Jr. is a first generation college student. He attended Estrella Mountain Community College, where he obtained his Associates in Arts. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies through Northern Arizona University. Gilmore Jr. is a Lead in the GCC Peer Success Coach Program. 

  • Where are all the Black Folks? Exploring the erasure of Black History in Arizona, is a Zoom presentation from Noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28. Presenter Meskerem Glegziabher earned her doctorate and master's in anthropology with a graduate concentration in gender and development from Michigan State University in 2016. She is an applied cultural anthropologist whose research and praxis focuses on intersectional marginalization, notions of belonging, and structural inequity.
  • Two more Soul Food Wednesday events are scheduled in the month at the center mall of campus. The following food trucks will be on campus. Feb. 21 - Mel and Libby's Soul Food Truck. Feb. 28 - Screaming Hot Chicken .

The public can also celebrate Black History Month with an event in Glendale.

Food trucks, African American products and vendors, a kids’ zone, and giveaways will be at the center of the celebration 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25 at Rose Lane Park, 5003 W. Marlette Ave.

The event is presented by the Black Business Owners Coalition of Glendale.
