Glendale judge appointment process draws controversy

Advisory board nixed ahead of upcoming council voting items

A difference in philosophy between a citizen board and the Glendale city council looms over a process that figures to culminate at the Tuesday, Oct. 27 council meeting.

In September, the council tabled two action items -- the reappointment of city judge John Burkholder, who was first appointed in 1995, and the appointment of the city’s new presiding judge, who will take over for Elizabeth Finn, Arizona’s longest-serving judge, who is retiring after a 40-year career as a judge and 18 years as Glendale’s presiding judge.

Both items were on the Sept. 22 council agenda. But both were pushed to the next meeting, Oct. 27, after a related action item was voted on.
