In addition to the mural work we featured in our three-part series on public art around Glendale, here are three other examples to view and enjoy in the city:
Desert Rose Pizza and Gastropub
A 16x90-foot acrylic mural depicting scenes from Glendale’s history was created by artist Lucretia Torva in 2015. It covers the entire north face of the former Desert Rose Pizza and Gastropub, which is transforming into The Horny Toad, at 6729 N. 57th Drive downtown. The scenes featured include Southwest Flour & Feed, a boarding house, a storefront, Diamond Garage, one of the city fathers, a view down Glendale Avenue, a blacksmith shop, another view of Glendale Avenue, and the sugar beet factory.
Marty Robbins Plaza
Marty Robbins Plaza, beside Pizza Old Roma, at 5740 W. Glendale Ave., in Historic Downtown Glendale, features a longstanding mural. According to the city’s planning department, this mural was a special project from about a decade ago.
“El Corrido de Glendale Arizona”
This tile work, titled “El Corrido de Glendale Arizona,” by artist Martin Moreno, hangs in Historic Downtown Glendale, along 58th Avenue. It is tucked in the alleyway behind Bitz-ee Mama’s Restaurant. “The mural designed presented is not the work of one individual,” Mr. Moreno states on its accompanying plaque, “rather it is a compilation of thoughts and ideas from Glendale citizens who believe in the power of art.”
Steve Stockmar has been with the Independent Newsmedia team since 2017. An NAU alum and Peoria resident, Steve’s community journalism pursuits focus mostly on arts & culture, education, and profiles of neighbors making a difference. In his spare time Steve plays in a vintage baseball league using uniforms and rules from the 1860s, and also acts (badly) in community theater. In addition, he has an unhealthy obsession with baseball and the Chicago Cubs.
