Gilbert Town Council appoints first community engagement task force members

Gilbert Town Council made the appointments Feb. 8 of nine residents who will serve on the town’s new community engagement task force.

The nine began service with their appointment at the council meeting and will do so through the advisement to council on the assigned issues or unless extended for more assignments.

The appointed members are Aya Affo, Chris Curley, Katie Hackett, Amy Holstein, Alexandra Rodriguez, Javier Rodriguez, Christine Sabel, Sean Warren and Heather Watts.

Additionally, Suzanne Lunt and Bus Obayomi will serve as alternates.


Using the town’s 2019 community needs assessment as a guide, council identified five topics that will be the priorities for the task force to address: domestic violence; mental health and suicide prevention; homelessness and low-income challenges; human and sex trafficking; and diversity, equity and inclusion.

The task force will identify opportunities for community engagement and actions that can be taken with those plans presented to council in May or June. After council approval, campaigns would start, town officials said. The hope is to link residents with services that can help them, be they nonprofits or state or county programs.

Council Member Kathy Tilque, who presented the administrative item to council and is the council liaison to the task force, said the town piloted a new program in selecting the task force members.

The town received 84 applicants for the positions, which Tilque said was a record amount for the town. It then selected 35 for video interviews, of which 20 applicants completed. Council then scored them from the interview before the appointments were made.
