Two Republicans are on the primary ballot for Arizona's 16th Legislative District senate seat.

LD 16 consists of sections of Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties. It was created in January 2022.

Two Republican candidates on LD 16 Senate primary ballot

Two Republicans are on the primary ballot for Arizona's 16th Legislative District senate seat.

LD 16 consists of sections of Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties. It was created in January 2022.

Incumbent Thomas "T.J." Shope, Jr. of Coolidge is being challenged by write-in candidate Judy Nganga of Maricopa.

In the Democratic primary Stacey Seaman is running unopposed.

Thomas "T.J." Shope, Jr.

Shope was born in Florence and is a graduate of Coolidge High School, Central Arizona College, and Arizona State University.

As a member of the state House of Representative, Shope served on the Committee on Agriculture & Water, the Committee on Energy, Environment & Natural Resources, as well as the Committee on Commerce. Shope was Speaker Pro Tempore from 2017 to 2021.

He was elected to the Arizona Senate in 2020 and serves as the vice chairman of three committees: Committee on Natural Resources, Energy and Water, Transportation & Technology, and Education. He is also a member of the Committee on Health & Human Services.

Judy Nganga

Nganga is a write-in candidates who describes herself as a "scholar, artist, author, children’s book illustrator, music producer, motivational speaker, politician, and creator."

She obtained her bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from Northern Arizona University and her Master's of Science in cybersecurity from Grand Canyon University.

According to her filing, she has lived in Pinal County for six years.

Stacey Seaman

On the Democratic side, Seaman is running unopposed.

A resident of Casa Grande, she grew up in Lake Havasu City and was one of the founding members of the Young Democrats of America Club at her high school and also volunteered for her father’s, LD 16 State House Democratic Member Keith Seaman, first legislative campaign when she was 16.

She has served on the Casa Grande Arts and Humanities Commission, the Casa Grande Parks and Recreation Advisory Board  and was a three-year member of the Creative Communities grant delegation through the Arizona Commission on the Arts.

She graduated from Oregon University and the University of Northern Colorado, was a professor of music at Central Arizona College, and is now is the director of the college’s Pence Center for the Arts.

The primary election takes place July 30.
