Eastern Canal bridge repairs nearly complete on Val Vista Drive in Gilbert

Posted

Construction is nearly complete on the Eastern Canal bridge repair on Val Vista Drive.

Town officials say they expect completion on the project, in which crews are reconstructing the bridge deck on Val Vista Drive and the Eastern Canal, by Aug. 31.

Traffic control has moved to the inside lanes, allowing the contractor to work on the outside portion of the bridge deck. The Eastern Canal/Santan Vista Trail access is closed at Val Vista Drive, Williams Field Road, and Ray Road.

To accommodate safe crossing in the future, the project includes a High Intensity Activated Crosswalk, or HAWK, crossing, which is similar to a traffic signal but can only be activated by pedestrians or trail users to stop Val Vista Drive traffic and safely cross Val Vista Drive.  The HAWK crossing is being installed.

A bypass pumping system has been removed.

The $3.51 million project, which began in April, is being funded by the town of Gilbert.
