Higley USD will consider severing ties with new superintendent

Posted

The Higley Unified School District Governing Board will consider on Wednesday a recommendation to rescind its employment agreement with Nate Carman to be the next superintendent.

The possible rescission is part of the board’s agenda at its regular meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the district office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert.

It is followed by an item selecting a superintendent for the 2024-25 school year.

Carman was put on administrative leave March 25 from his job as superintendent at Socorro Independent School District in El Paso, Texas, after an external forensics audit identified him as having a possible conflict of interest regarding district purchasing decisions.

Prior to the regular meeting, the board will meet in executive session to discuss and consider a possible contract extension, but no other details can be offered because of state law governing executive sessions.

Associate Superintendent Sherry Richards is on a one-year contract to be the interim superintendent while the district conducted a nationwide search for a new superintendent. The previous superintendent, Dawn Foley, resigned last June.

That nationwide search, conducted with a search firm, Ray and Associates, resulted in the selection of Carman. The board approved his contract Feb. 21.

Carman previously was a finalist for the superintendency at Peoria Unified School District.
