Remembering Elizabeth (Betty) Kearns Krueger (1928-2023)
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Elizabeth (Betty) Kearns Krueger in Boulder, Colorado, on September 30th, 2023, at the age of 95.
Betty was born to Elizabeth and Konstanty Stefanowicz in Cleveland, Ohio, where she grew up with five siblings.
Betty met her future husband, Rev. Robert Kearns, at Huron College in South Dakota; they were married in 1950 and gave birth to three children, Stephen, Rebecca, and Julia. The family lived in Boise, Idaho, and moved to Durango, Colorado in 1968. Following retirement, they relocated to Sun City West, Arizona, until Robert died in 2000. In 2004, Betty married William Krueger and lived in Arizona until he died in 2019.
Betty had a successful career as a materials manager at Community Hospital in Durango, Colorado. She was athletic and passionate about sports, skiing, and all things tennis. Betty won tennis championships in college and continued her success in the Arizona Senior Olympics. She loved racing her MGB, bowling, and billiards. She and her second husband, Bill, were also enthusiastic ballroom dancers.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Robert Kearns, in 2000; her second husband, William Krueger, in 2019; her youngest daughter, Julia Eckler, in 2021; as well as four of her siblings, her sister Regina Holt, of Ohio, and her brothers Henry Stevens, Edward Stevens, and Marion Stevens all of Hamilton, Ontario Canada. She is survived by her sister Irene Stevens of Ohio, her son Stephen Kearns (Michael), of San Francisco, CA, and her daughter Rebecca Leffingwell (Dean) of Louisville, CO. She is also survived by her stepdaughter JoAnn Hinnenthal (Jack) of Wayzata, MN. and stepsons William Roger Krueger (Barbara) of Land O' Lakes, FL., Rev Daniel Lee Krueger (Kris) of Cedar Rapids, IA., and Steven Allen Krueger of Glencoe, MN.
She is also survived by three grandchildren, thirteen step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and fourteen step-great-grandchildren.
A springtime interment and memorial will occur at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
