A driver died after crashing his vehicle into a power pole and bus stop in Mesa Friday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Mesa Police Department.

According to Mesa Police, the accident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. near 1600 N. Stapley Drive. The spokesperson said officers arrived to the scene and found a vehicle that had veered off the road, collided with a bus stop and hit the back wall of a residence.

The driver was freed from the vehicle just before it caught fire, the spokesperson said. Medical personnel, police and residents attempted life-saving first aid. The driver was transported to the hospital but ultimately died from his injuries.

The Mesa Police spokesperson said investigators speculate that the driver was traveling northbound on Stapley in the curb lane before veering off the roadway. Police said they do not know what caused the driver's actions and aim to find out during the investigation.
