The Sun City Players Community Theater will present “Over the River and Through the Woods,” which opens 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 at Mountain View Center, 9749 N. 107th Ave. The run continues through Sunday, Jan. 20.

The cast is preparing to show audiences that Italian grandparents can be pretty darn emotional when it comes to their favorite grandson.

The part of grandson, Nick Cristano, is played by Bobby Havens, and his would be-girlfriend (blind date set-up) is played by Diana Lamb. The parts of Nick’s maternal grandparents are played by Jim McConnell as Frank Gianelli, and Vicki Schordje as Aida Gianelli. Nick’s paternal grandparents are played by Bruce Dettloff as Nunzio Cristano and Lynette Rotolo as Emma Cristano.

“Over the River” features three debut actors with the club. In his second year with Players, Mr. Dettloff spent last year as part of the technical crew for “Making God Laugh” and “Nunsense.”

Although Vicki Schordje along with her husband, Don, are a long-time Players members, she won her part in her very first audition.

“When she read for the part of Aida we were blown away. Who knew?” director Greg Engstrom said. “Diana Lamb is a new member this year. Diana is a veteran actress with many past credits and we are so pleased to have her with us as a member and so pleased that she is part of this cast.”

Lynette Rotolo made her Players debut as Fairy June in the fall production of “Southern Fried Funeral.”

“We are so pleased that she was willing to be our Emma,” Mr. Engstrom said. “Veteran actors and valuable club members Jim McConnell and Bobby Havens lend their considerable talents to round out this excellent cast.”

Backstage, Beverly Strissel will be in charge of set decorations and props and Sharlene MacPhee will be doing makeup, wigs and helping with costuming. Eric Emerson has volunteered to take on the very important job of controlling the lighting. Dan See, one of the club’s most talented directors and actors, has agreed to be our stage manager.

Mr. Engstrom said he still needs two or three volunteers to help backstage during production as dressers and to assist with props. Members and potential members willing to help should contact Bill Loslo at loslo2001@msn.com .
