Hispanic Heritage Month is the party’s theme next month
¡Somos Peoria!, the Valley’s largest Hispanic Heritage Month event, takes over Old Town Peoria 2-10:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at 8311 W. Washington St.
The event will feature live performances by El Chicano, Brenton Wood and The Latin Breed. El Chicano, the festival’s headlining act, is a premier Latino rock, funk band founded in East Los Angeles in 1970. The group has recorded 12 studio albums and earned five gold records. Now in their 50th year, El Chicano is still recording and touring.
Brenton Wood is an American R&B and soul musician whose career has spanned an impressive five decades. Mr. Wood had two hit singles in 1967, “The Oogum Boogum Song” and “Gimme Little Sign.”
The Latin Breed is a 10-piece band born on the south side of San Antonio in 1969. Their sound blends influences of Tejano, R&B, jazz and big band. They have recorded 19 albums, and received a Tejano Music Award.
New to ¡Somos Peoria! this year is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28. The tournament is open to youth and adults, and registration is required at peoria3x3.com . Festivalgoers will also get the chance to sample a variety of local, traditional foods, beer and margaritas, shop arts and crafts, and play in the activity zone for both kids and adults. The event will span Old Town Peoria between 83rd, Peoria and Grand avenues.
Event admission is $5 before 5 p.m. and $10 after 5 p.m. Children ages 12 and under are free. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $35. Parking is free, and a free shuttle will be provided from the Peoria City Hall campus parking lot, 8401 W. Monroe St., to the festival.
