I noticed in a recent edition that someone identifying herself as an RN who lives in Sun City said she noticed lots of people at the recreation centers using the exercise equipment who did not wipe it down when they finished using it.
I was surprised that someone with medical training did not also note that the posted instructions for “cleaning” the equipment encouraged people to use a hand towel brought from home or the paper towels with the disinfectant provided by the center.
Most of the people who bring their own towels wear them around their sweaty necks, wipe their faces and then keep them in a gym bag. The instructions on the board at the rec centers need to be changed to discourage this behavior since we are not cleaning off dirt but germs like bacteria and viruses. By using your own rag, you just put more germs on the equipment and we are an aged community with waning immune systems.
You don’t need medical training to understand sterile procedure. If you make a roast beef sandwich, do you use the knife you cut the meat with to spread the mayo on the bread?
Please do not use your own face-wiper to “clean” the equipment. When you go to the grocery store, they don’t demand you clean your cart on the way out but they do give you disposable antiseptic wipes to protect yourself from germs when you go into the store. Do this when you use the exercise equipment and, if you wipe it afterwards, use the same paper towel drenched in the disinfectant solution.
