PROTECTION: Teachers already overloaded

It is now being suggested to train and arm teachers and other school personnel as a way to defend against and prevent school shootings.

Our teachers already have an overloaded and high stress workload. All their attention should be targeted towards nurturing, mentoring and educating our children. Like any other person in any other job, they are subject to emotional breakdowns that can lead to unfortunate consequences. It is only a matter of time before an armed school employee may cause the same mayhem we hope to prevent.

Then there is the reality of unforeseen collateral damage. By attacking an armed intruder, the likelihood of shooting an innocent student who is close by is troubling. Do we really think a mischievous and determined child could not get their hands on a locked gun in a teacher’s desk? After all, if you make it difficult for the teacher to get the gun in an emergency, it may as well not even be there.

There are those who are even suggesting that teachers carry openly.

I, for one, do not want my children and grandchildren to live in a gestapo environment just so a few citizens can own a weapon of mass destruction.
