GOLF CARS: Lesko law should be repealed

In August 2014, former state lawmaker Debbie Lesko had a parade to celebrate the passage of her new golf car law (House Bill 2027).

This allowed golf cars to be driven on the far right of the roadways when cars were using the same roadways. This golf car law is wrong, and it is a killer. Now all the golf car seat belts that were installed for community safety are being recalled and replaced because they are unsafe. More expenses for a bad and dangerous law.

We see most of the street driven golf cars dangerously being used on the Sun City West/Sun City roads without seat belts. We see few golf cars being driven on the far right of the road but in the middle of the road. We see many golf car accidents that resulted in many elderly deaths. Finally, we see golf cars being illegally driven on Bell Road and Grand Avenue going to the stores that are outside the senior living communities.

This was a very popular law to golf car owners, but it is very dangerous to all drivers. Golf cars are not properly equipped to be safe and survive in a car accident. This was a very popular law for golf car dealers. After this dangerous convenience law many golf car dealers opened in our retirement communities and have a massive number of golf cars on display.

Debbie Lesko became very popular because of the golf car law — especially with golf car owners, golf car dealers and the local undertakers. Politicians need be more concerned about safety and not business interests or the popularity of dangerous laws.
