FROM THE EDITOR: Let me introduce myself

By Matt Loeschman

Now that I’ve been back in Arizona for about four months, I realized I have not written a column to let readers know a little bit about myself.

I’ve returned to the West Valley as the news editor of the Daily News-Sun with nearly 20 years working in various capacities of the journalism field. Longtime readers may recognize my name as I previously worked for Independent Newsmedia from 2000-2009, covering numerous communities but most prominently Surprise during its massive growth phase.

Most recently, I served as the business editor and city reporter for The Williamson County Sun, a 160-year-old publication just north of Austin in Georgetown, Texas. I covered all aspects of the city, including city council meetings while also spearheading business coverage in the rapidly-growing community that ranked as the fastest-growing city in the nation in 2015.

Interestingly, during my tenure covering Surprise, the West Valley community ranked first for two years in a row on that same population growth list issued by the U.S. Census Bureau. I like to say that I only go where the growth is.

Also in Georgetown, I had a prominent role with SHN Sports, a locally owned company focused on high school sports broadcasting in Central Texas. For three years, I served as a color commentator for Georgetown High School football, baseball and basketball. On occasion, I called play-by-play for those GHS teams with broadcasts appearing on the internet and local radio. I do miss those broadcasts and I may continue doing some prep broadcasting in the Valley should the opportunity present itself.

Between stints in Arizona, I worked as a technical writer in Austin specializing in documents that outlined maintenance procedures for the solar and semiconductor industries. This position allowed for multiple trips abroad to Spain and Italy to work hand-in-hand with numerous foreign firms.

Other stops in my journalism career include New River and three Texas communities — Uvalde, Clute and Angleton.

In my spare time, I enjoy movies, social media, attending sporting events (from prep to pro) and exercising.

In my new role, I oversee the editorial content of the daily newspaper while also contributing some writing of my own. I could not be more pleased to be back in the West Valley.
