Katrina Shawver, author of the award-winning nonfiction biography “Henry: A Polish Swimmer’s True Story of Friendship from Auschwitz to America” (Köehler Books, November 2017) will serve as the Writer in Residence for the Glendale Public Library from March through May.
The Writers in Residence program promotes writing in communities by connecting local, professional authors to serve as Writers in Residence at local libraries. Ms. Shawver will be on site at the Foothills Branch, 19055 N. 57th Ave. Members of the public can get expert advice on their writing by booking a one-on-one appointment with her or attending a public workshop to learn new skills in craft and publishing. All experience levels are welcome.
One-on-one appointments are available by advance registration on the library website. For specific times, locations, and details, visit the website for Glendale Public Library calendar of events (glendaleaz.com/library). Call Sarah Herlache at 623-930-3844.
This program is supported by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the institute of Museum and Library Services.
Ms. Shawver is an experienced writer, blogger, and self-professed “history geek.” For 11 years she wrote newspaper columns for the Arizona Republic. In 2002, she met Henry Zguda, an 85-year-old Polish Catholic survivor of Auschwitz and Buchenwald during WWII who lived a mile from her Phoenix home. After one interview she impulsively offered to write his story. She subsequently conducted extensive research on World War II, Poland, Auschwitz and the Holocaust, including a visit to Poland and Germany in 2013.
Today, she has been honored in the Polish American community for her efforts and presentations, has presented on Polish history at the community college level, and her book garnered first place for Published Nonfiction in the 2018 Arizona Authors Association Literary Contest.
