This year is 30th anniversary at Beardsley

The Horseshoe Club of Sun City West will soon be changing their meeting times to transition from winter to spring.

Starting May 1 the club will meet 8-10 a.m. Monday through Friday at the Beardsley Rec Center, 12755 W. Beardsley Road. Before then the club will still meet at 9 a.m.

Originally organized as an unchartered club in 1981 by Sun City West residents and pitchers Ken Tower and Ralph Jones, the Western Horseshoe Club took roots at the horseshoe courts at the R.H. Johnson Rec Center.

On Feb. 8, 1984 club president Alfred Schelke received SCW Chartered Club status for the Western Ringers Horseshoe Club. In 1989, to make way for the 18-hole miniature golf course and the Bocce courts, the club was relocated to the Beardsley Rec Center, where it remains today. The Beardsley courts were officially sanctioned by the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association.

All SCW owners, residents and guests, men and women, are welcome and encouraged to participate. An SCW rec card is needed.

Pitchers have the option of pitching from 30 feet rather than the regulation 40 feet. Experienced pitchers are at the courts daily to help meet some of members, settle in, learn the game, and have some fun.

There are currently 75 members.
