The mission of Sun City Community Assistance Network is to, “Connect people with resources to enhance their standard of living.
In other words, Sun City CAN helps people save money on things like property taxes, income taxes, utilities, Medicare premiums, prescription drugs and other things.
Many benefits go unclaimed simply because people are unaware that the benefits exist. In an effort to shed light on some of the help that is available to low-income seniors, I will write a column each month about a different senior help program.
Durning tax season, AARP TaxAide volunteers program are at the Sun City CAN office.
These volunteers prepare and e-file federal and state income tax returns at no cost. AARP TaxAide is a joint endeavor of the AARP Foundation and the Internal Revenue Service. The TaxAide volunteers have been trained and certified by the IRS.
Tax season is Feb. 4 to Monday, April 15. TaxAide volunteers prepare returns Monday – Thursday. Tax preparation at the CAN office, 10195 W. Coggins Drive, is done on a first come, first served basis. The doors to the CAN office open at 7:30 a.m. and usually there are people lined up waiting outside the door. Since there are no appointments, clients should come prepared for significant wait times.
This program is open to everyone regardless of your age or place of residence. There are no maximum income limits; however, some complicated tax return are out of scope because the volunteers have not been trained in those areas.
Clients should bring all of their tax documents, such as W-2’s, 1099-R’s, dividend and interest statements, brokerage statements, Social Security benefits statement and other proof of income. If you are itemizing your deductions, medical expenses and charitable donations should be added up ahead of time to save time during on-site tax preparation process.
