DeLano: Sun City residents need to step up to the plate

By Jerry DeLano

As summer begins to roll into Sun City, things begin to slow down and life returns to what some of us consider a more normal pace.

With temperatures likely to be in the 90s and higher on a continuous basis very soon (if not already), we become more relaxed and reflective in cool air-conditioned comfort. Some may enjoy taking a time out with a refreshing swim at one of the recreation centers.

While many Recreation Centers of Sun City clubs remain activity over the summer with extra elbow room to spare, taking up a new hobby is always fun and rewarding. I would presume that just about everybody I know has at least a project or two that could use some undivided attention.

Summer also gives us an opportunity to sit back and reflect on what we should be doing with our time in more meaningful ways.

Have you considered wanting to do more? Really get involved? Do you believe you have the skills and desire to work with others to truly guide RCSC for the next three years and beyond? Why not step up to the plate (so to speak) and get involved to help shape the future of Sun City? Why not run for the RCSC Board of Directors?

Your willingness to serve on the board will allow you to use many of your talents in new and exciting ways. A chance to stand up for your beliefs and concerns. Be part of a team that makes tough decisions using common sense, keeping in mind what will benefit members most.

As I quoted Bob Dylan earlier this year — “The times – they are a-changin’!” There is a new energy in the air and the time might just be right for those wishing to express their desires and dreams for this community — in an environment open to all.

The requirements necessary to become a candidate are as follows:

Must be at least 55 years of age; must not reside with or be related by marriage or birth to any other member of the board, senior management staff or board candidate; must be a deeded real estate owner of property in Sun City, Maricopa County, Arizona; must be an RCSC member in good standing; must reside in Sun City, Arizona and be available at least 10 months of the year; must meet the requirements to hold an Arizona liquor license (RCSC holds liquor licenses that require board officers to be included on the licensing); must be eligible and available to serve a three-year term; should be available to attend board candidate orientation(s); and cannot serve on any board of a chartered club or green committee or golf association affiliated with RCSC golf courses, if elected.

Are you qualified? Are you willing? Current board directors are available to meet with those interested to answer your questions and discuss the responsibilities that serving on the board entails. Call the board office at 623-561-4620 if you would like to schedule an appointment.

Should you decide to get off the bench and give it your all, candidate packets will be available at the RCSC corporate offices at Lakeview Recreation Center, 10626 W. Thunderbird Blvd., beginning Monday, June 3. You’ll need to make this packet request in person, and present your RCSC Member card.

Candidates must submit their fully completed petition, signed by 100 or more RCSC members in good standing, along with all other forms in the packet no later than noon Friday, Oct. 4.

Let’s step up to the plate and hit one out of the park — for the future of Sun City! Serving on the RCSC Board of Directors could be your best “home run” ever.
