SCW residents leaving garage doors open

A garage door in Sun City West left open for a lengthy time.

Some Sun City West residents leave their garage doors open for long periods of time.

Sometimes it is done because people are working in there and going in and out a lot. And sometimes people leave the doors open for hours at a time. There is a pervasive feeling in many parts of Sun City West that crime just doesn’t happen here and it’s all right to leave the garage doors open, according to some residents.

However, this is what often entices criminal activity, according to some law enforcement officials.A short drive along Rampart Drive one afternoon found two garage doors open with no one seen inside. About 30 minutes later the doors were still open and the residents were contacted by this reporter.

In recent years the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has reported several thefts of golf clubs from the Sun Cities, frequently from golf cars in a garage with an open door.

Myron Finegold, Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City West commander, said his organization contacts an average of six homeowners per night because the garage door was open.
