Man sentenced to 27 years in prison for death of 3-month-old daughter

A man was sentenced to 27 years in prison for injuring and killing his 3-month-old daughter in 2017.

Jose Orellana-Ruiz, 30, will serve time in the Arizona Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

“Adrianna Gutierrez deserved more from the man who was her father,” Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery stated. “Instead of the love, encouragement, and support she should have received over the course of her life, her life was senselessly ended.

“While 27 years cannot restore Adrianna’s life, it is a clear demonstration that the defendant has a price to pay.”

On Feb. 26, 2017, Mr. Orellana-Ruiz asked his daughter’s mother to bring the child over for a visit. After he was with the baby for a few hours, he asked if he could keep her overnight.

During that night, Mr. Orellana-Ruiz woke his family because the infant was unconscious and barely breathing. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she died three days later after suffering serious brain injuries, authorities said.

Mr. Orellana-Ruiz initially told investigators his daughter’s injuries were caused by a fall while he was holding her. However, he eventually admitted his daughter kept crying during the night while he trying to sleep and, out of anger, he threw her against a headboard and threw a baby bottle at her face two times.

The Arizona Department of Child Safety said it had received a report Feb. 27, 2017 regarding a 3-month old girl who arrived at the hospital in respiratory distress. Upon examination, the girl was found to in critical condition and her injuries included a skull fracture, a subdural hematoma and bruising to her face.

Mr. Orellana-Ruiz was arrested in Phoenix for child abuse.  On March 13, 2017, he was initially indicted on a first-degree murder charge.
