An 80-year-old man died after he was struck while crossing a street in Sun City Tuesday morning, according to a sheriff’s office spokesperson.
The man has been identified as Edwin Copeland of Sun City.
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at about 6:50 a.m. on Jan. 31 near the intersection of 99th Avenue and Cameo Drive.
An MCSO spokesperson said Copeland was crossing the street on 99th Avenue at Cameo Drive. Two vehicles were travelling southbound on 99th Avenue when the accident occurred. The first vehicle sideswiped Copeland and the second vehicle struck him.
Witnesses told investigators Copeland looked as if he was going to cross then changed his mind but then decided to cross in front of the vehicles.
There is no impairment to the drivers of either vehicle and speed is not a factor in this case.
The investigation is still ongoing into any violations committed by the pedestrian and the drivers.
All parties remained at the scene and the incident remains under investigation. Copeland was transported to Abrazo West Campus in Goodyear with life-threatening injuries, and was pronounced deceased later that day.
One of the drivers was also transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
Southbound 99th Avenue between Cameo Drive and Boswell Boulevard was blocked until about 9:30 a.m., according to a tweet from the Maricopa County Department of Transportation.
