Early returns in the run-off for a Peoria City Council seat showed two candidates in a close race, but as more votes came in, the incumbent broke it open.

Incumbent Councilmember Vicki Hunt, who brought in about 58 percent of the vote in the Acacia District, appears to be the winner, while newcomer Brittany Burback brought in about 42 percent, according to unofficial results.

Vicki Hunt

Ms. Hunt is a former teacher with the Peoria High School and was elected to two terms in 2004 and 2014.

She thanked the citizens of the Acacia District, which covers parts of southern Peoria.

“My promise to you is to keep my door and phone line open to hear your concerns. I also want to thank the many folks who have supported me along this journey to election over the past year. Continued support from family, friends, constituents, local business folks and neighbors motivates me to work hard on your behalf for the next four years,” she said. “So much has been accomplished in Acacia, but so much more still needs to be done.”

Brittany Burback

Ms. Burback is a Peoria native who graduated from Peoria High School and Arizona State University with a law degree.

She has worked with Honeywell as well as the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, and recently established her own practice in Peoria.

Ms. Burback did not respond to requests for an interview.

With the election of Ms. Hunt, the next term will include the same members who are currently sitting, including incumbent victors from the August primary – Mayor Cathy Carlat and Councilman Carlo “Rocky” Leone. They will begin their terms in January.
