A search for a missing Navy veteran came to an end when authorities were alerted to a dead body found at Lake Pleasant.
Authorities on July 6 were alerted to a severely decomposed body in the French Creek area of Lake Pleasant. It was determined on Monday to be that of Joseph Casey.
Through a joint investigation by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit and Lake Patrol, officials had been interviewing multiple people regarding Mr. Casey, who was reported missing June 21.
MCSO said there was no evidence of foul play, and an autopsy from the Office of the Medical Examiner also ruled foul play out. No signs of trauma were found.
The state of the decomposition made visual identification impossible. MCSO turned the body over to the medical examiner but the crime lab was able to get a fingerprint off the body.
Investigators believe Mr. Casey’s death was a tragic accident, with heat exposure a significant factor.
The last time Mr. Casey was seen alive, he entered another person’s vehicle to get help after his Jeep broke down at the north end of the lake.
