Local volunteer leaders last week announced the success of the Rotary Club of Surprise’s 5th Annual Taste of Surprise fundraising event.
Event organizer Chris Judd praised the success of this year’s effort, which is among the charity organizations most important annual events and was hosted April 7 at Surprise Stadium, 15930 N. Bullard Ave.
“Taste of Surprise is our biggest event of the year and guides what we do for the rest of the year,” Mr. Judd stated. “Funding from the event will help us pay for grants, scholarships, and service projects in the community.”
This year’s increased turnout will help the club meet their mission in the community, Mr. Judd said.
“We had about 1,500 people at the event, an increase from last year of about 20 percent,” Mr. Judd stated.
Admission to the event supports nine local charities, including: One Step Beyond, Inc., Benevilla, A New Leaf, Surprise Youth Foundation, Black Family and Child Services, What’s Happening Art Movement, Homeless Youth Connection’s Empowering Youth for the Future program, Valley View Food Bank and Rotary Club of Surprise Community Foundation.
Beyond assisting area service groups and agencies, the event is also a boon to those who put it on and participate each year, according to Mr. Judd.
“The amount of effort that goes into the event is great team builder for the many talented leaders and members of the club,” Mr. Judd stated. “Everybody involved does so as a volunteer and it really is exciting to see how hard your teammates are working to make the event successful each year.”
Rotary Club of Surprise President-Elect Jay Lickus also praised those who joined in the effort of putting on the, as well as those who showed up to enjoy the evening.
“Every year, our Taste of Surprise fundraising event just keeps getting better. This year, our 5th anniversary, was a wonderful success,” said Mr. Lickus. “The Rotary Club of Surprise is proud to work hand-in-hand with the city of Surprise, their Community & Recreational Services Department, and the local business community.
He said this year’s event featured the largest number of local eateries, breweries and businesses supporting the event than in any previous year and their participation and enthusiasm helped make the event successful.
“It was heartwarming to see how passionate these business owners are about giving back to our community and helping others in need,” Mr. Lickus said. “We had an increase in attendance of almost 20 percent over last year, which means we raised more money to support our local charities.”
The 6th Annual Taste of Surprise will be hosted Saturday, April 6, 2019, according to Mr. Lickus.
“The Rotary Club of Surprise is already looking forward to our 2019 event, which will be held on April 6,” Mr. Lickus said. “We welcome anyone who is interested in becoming a member of our club and giving back to our community.”
Additional information will be announced later.
The club meets on the first and third Thursdays each month and at El Tepeyac Café, 17300 N. Sun Village Parkway. Anyone may attend, Mr. Lickus said.
