A man changing a tire along a West Valley freeway died after he was struck by a passing vehicle.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety reports Petru Pop, 47, of El Mirage was the man struck around 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Mr. Pop’s Honda sedan was on the side of the northbound 91st Avenue on-ramp to the Loop 101 fixing the left rear tire.

A Ford pickup truck was passing when it struck Mr. Pop.

Medical personnel transported Mr. Pop to Banner Thunderbird Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The pickup truck remained at the scene. The driver has not been identified and it is unknown if they face charges or a citation.

DPS continues to investigate.

The collision caused officials to block multiple lanes of Loop 101 for hours while they cleared the scene.
