Highway authorities are investigating after a driver died from injuries sustained in a collision in Surprise.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday along Grand Avenue near Mountain View Boulevard.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety initially reported the incident as a single-vehicle serious injury crash.

“The Honda CRV crossed multiple lanes of traffic and struck a light pole,” DPS stated. “The vehicle was briefly on fire.”

The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle and was transported to a local trauma center, according to the Surprise Fire-Medical Department. The agency reported the collision as a rollover.

On Wednesday, DPS confirmed the collision turned fatal.

DPS said Frank Landon Daniel, 78, of Surprise died at the hospital. It was not immediately known what led up to the crash.

“The driver was undergoing surgery for his injuries when he passed away,” DPS Media Relations Specialist Bart Graves stated.

A Dignity Memorial obituary indicates Mr. Daniel was born March 10, 1940.

TV news helicopters hovered over the scene and showed the vehicle severely damaged.
