A man is accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old who later gave birth last year.

Glendale police report Angel Javier Chavez, 29, was arrested Thursday afternoon near 31st Avenue and Cactus Road.

According to court documents, the 16-year-old girl’s mother contacted Glendale police in December to report her daughter had given birth in October but the father was not known at the time.

The girl would not tell her mother who the father was until December.

She told authorities that in 2018, Angel Chavez had been staying at her family’s home on and off. One night, he entered the girl’s room and allegedly sexually assaulted her.

The girl reportedly did not know she was pregnant until she gave birth in October.

In January, authorities collected DNA from Mr. Chavez, who was in custody with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office for an unrelated charge.

In April, results confirmed Mr. Chavez to be the father of the baby.

On Thursday, police arrested Mr. Chavez, who admitted to having sex with the girl.

Mr. Chavez was booked into jail in lieu of a $200,000 cash-only bond, facing charges of sexual abuse, sexual conduct with a minor, and sexual assault. He is due in court May 16 and 20.
