National literacy nonprofit Kids Need to Read, based in Mesa, donated books valued at $1,730 to the library at Sky View Elementary School, 8624 W. Sweetwater Ave., in Peoria.
Sky View is a Title I school, meaning a large percentage of attendees are disadvantaged. A portion of the Kids Need to Read book donation was funded by a grant from Phoenix-based Libraries, Ltd. The mission of Libraries, Ltd. is to promote literacy in Arizona children and teens by providing books to libraries, schools and other organizations. The nonprofit was founded by Judy Goddard, former first lady of Arizona.
Peoria Unified School District No. 11 is a school district headquartered in the District Administration Center in Glendale.
In conjunction with the grant by Kids Need to Read, Phoenix authors and Kids Need to Read supporters Amy Fellner Dominy and Nate Evans delivered an educational program for the kindergarten, first and second grade classes at Sky View. KNTR will be providing a Highlights magazine and activity book for each of the approximately 200 children attending the author event. These 400 periodicals for the children to take home and enjoy with their families represent a value of $2,248.
