Car ends up in Salt River ravine following Tempe chase

Posted

A Tempe police investigation of a stolen vehicle Tuesday night led to a chase that ended with the suspects’ vehicle falling into a ravine along the Salt River, authorities said.

The incident began about 8:15 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 6, when Tempe police were investigating an occupied stolen vehicle near 40th Street and University Drive. The driver of the car drove away when officers attempted to stop it, striking a patrol vehicle.

After a short pursuit, police ended it because, they said, the suspect was speeding and driving erratically.

Before the pursuit ended the car was seen near Elwood Street and University Drive, police said. Officers continued patrolling the area and spotted the vehicle in a nearby ravine.

One of the suspects was taken into custody in the ravine, but the terrain required assistance from the Phoenix Fire Department to remove the other suspect, police said.

Phoenix fire officials said the car fell 200 feet.

The suspects were taken to a hospital for minor injuries, police said. No officers were injured.
