Volunteers needed for Surprise MLK event

City to host most of celebration online

Posted

The next Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration and Service in Surprise will be held virtually.

City officials said they are looking for sponsors, performers, art contest submissions and community service volunteers for the fifth annual event in January.

The exact date is still being nailed down, but MLK Day in 2021 falls on Monday, Jan. 18.

According to a news release, the city plans to celebrate Mr. King’s life by focusing on his community-building efforts and service to others.

The program is for all ages and will include a variety of local musicians, performers and speakers.

The community service portion of the event will take place in person, but with enhanced safety measures that follow CDC guidelines to protect against COVID-19.

The city is looking for those who want to get involved with sponsorship, virtual performances, an art contest or a day of service.

The city is offering three levels of sponsorship, between $100 on the low end and $1,000 on the high end.

The Surprise Martin Luther King Jr. Advisory Committee is looking for video submissions from vocal and other performing artists or groups that suit the feel of the event.

Suggested songs could include “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and “We Shall Overcome.”

The theme for the 2021 MLK Art Competition is “Unity, Service, and Collaboration.”

For the day of service component, volunteers can help with a community service project around town. Projects will last approximately one to four hours.

Advanced registration is required due to COVID-19 gathering limitations. Email Larry Garcia at Larry.garcia@surpriseaz.gov to volunteer.
