Teens can sign up for Surprise Youth Justice Project

The city of Surprise is recruiting new members for the Surprise Youth Justice Project.
SYJP is comprised of high school students committed to increasing the availability of restorative justice opportunities for young people.
In partnership with Maricopa County and Surprise City Court, students participate in Teen Court — a diversion program for juvenile offenders, where cases are assessed by a collection of their peers and appropriate consequences are determined. These practices effectively resolve conflict and deter future offenses, while allowing offenders to take responsibility for their actions and maintain unencumbered access to opportunity.
Students now in 9-12th grade may apply, as long as they are attending a high school within Surprise city limits or reside within Surprise city limits.
Applications are being accepted now through Sept. 13. The application consists of a video submission, no longer than 1 minute and 15 seconds, and should answer the following questions:
• What is your name, grade and school you attend?
• What is justice?
• What role should justice play in our community?
• Why do you want to be a part of this project?
Those interested need to send videos to Youth Services Coordinator Gina Neria by uploading to Google Drive and sharing with cityofsurpriseyouth@gmail.com.
Applicants must also have a parent or guardian complete and return a parent acknowledgment form.
